Is Metro Gnome really a free metronome app for Android?
Yes - completely free. The metronome, chromatic tuner, rhythm game, and speed trainer are all free with no time limits. There are optional purchases to remove ads or unlock cosmetic items, but the core tools never cost anything. Metro Gnome works on Android 7.0 and above, fully offline.
How does the BPM counter and tap tempo work?
Just tap the TAP button in rhythm - Metro Gnome calculates your BPM from the interval between taps (requires at least 2 taps within 2.5 seconds). You can also save any BPM as a named preset and switch between songs instantly. The metronome uses raw AudioTrack on the Android audio stack for sample-accurate timing that doesn't drift over long sessions.
Does Metro Gnome have a speed trainer?
Yes. The speed trainer ramps the tempo up automatically. Set a start BPM, a target BPM, a step size, and how many bars to play at each step, then practise a passage slowly and let the app raise the tempo for you until you can play it up to speed. It's the simplest way to build clean speed on any instrument.
Does the tuner work in a noisy practice room?
That's exactly what it was designed for. When you open the tuner, it spends a few seconds profiling your room's background noise. After that it distinguishes your instrument from the noise floor, rejects voices and broadband sounds, and only locks on to a stable musical tone. You'll see on-screen guidance (QUIET → ACQUIRING → LOCKED) so you always know what it's hearing. It works fine in rehearsal rooms, kitchens, or wherever you practise.
What makes this better than Metronome Beats or Pro Metronome?
Metro Gnome is the only free app that combines a precision metronome and a chromatic tuner that works in noisy rooms. Metronome Beats has no tuner at all. Pro Metronome switched paying customers to a subscription without warning. Metro Gnome has no subscription, no bait-and-switch, and a built-in rhythm game on top.
Is Metro Gnome good for music teachers?
Yes. The built-in practice timer lets you set a session goal (5, 10, 15, 20, or 30 minutes). When the session completes, the app tracks a daily streak and total sessions - so students build a practice habit and you can check in on their consistency. Does it work offline?
