Why You Rush When You Play (And Why It Gets Worse at Slow Tempos)

Almost every musician has been told they rush. Very few have ever been told by how much, in which direction, or at which point in the bar. That missing detail is the difference between a vague criticism you carry around for years and a habit you can actually fix in a fortnight.

Rushing and dragging get talked about as if they were personality traits. Some players are "rushers", some are "draggers", and that is apparently that. It is a useless way to think about it, because it turns a measurable, correctable habit into a fixed character flaw. Timing is not a gift. It is a motor skill with a number attached, and once you know your number the fix stops being mysterious.

Start By Measuring, Not Guessing

Before any of the advice below is worth reading, get a baseline. You cannot judge your own timing while playing, for reasons worth understanding in their own right, and a teacher's "you were a bit ahead there" is a memory of a feeling rather than a measurement.

Two different problems, two different fixes. A consistent offset in one direction is a tempo-perception habit, and it responds to deliberate correction: you lean the other way until the new placement feels normal. Random scatter in both directions is a motor-control problem, and leaning does nothing for it. It responds to slower, cleaner repetitions. Treating one as if it were the other is why so much metronome practice produces so little change.

Why Rushing Happens

Rushing is not carelessness. It is what your body does under a fairly predictable set of conditions, and naming them tells you where to look.

Dragging has a shorter list. It usually comes from either reading and processing (you are decoding the notation rather than playing it) or from physically not being able to execute a passage at the tempo, in which case the timing problem is really a technique problem wearing a disguise.

Why Slow Tempos Are Harder Than Fast Ones

Here is the part that surprises people. If your timing falls apart somewhere, it is far more likely to be at 60 BPM than at 160.

Fast tempos are propped up by information. At 160 BPM a beat arrives every 375 milliseconds, so you are corrected almost continuously and there is very little room in each bar for drift to accumulate before the next reference point arrives. There is also so much happening per bar that a small timing error is buried under the sheer density of notes.

At 60 BPM you get a full second of silence between beats, and nothing in that second tells you where you are. You are running on your internal clock alone, which is exactly the thing being tested. Worse, the maths works against your perception: 50 milliseconds of error is 13 percent of a beat at 160 BPM, where it is unmissable, but only 5 percent of a beat at 60 BPM, where it feels almost fine. The error is identical in milliseconds. It just stops feeling like an error.

The practical consequence is straightforward. Slow practice is not a gentler version of fast practice, it is a harder and more revealing version, and it is the tempo range where a timing habit has nowhere to hide. If you can hold a genuinely steady pulse at 60 BPM you can hold one anywhere.

Five Fixes That Actually Change the Number

Every one of these is aimed at a specific cause above, and every one is testable. That last part matters: if you cannot re-measure, you cannot tell a real improvement from a good day.

Then Measure Again

Re-run the same test after a week of this and compare two numbers. The average offset tells you whether the directional habit is shifting toward zero. The spread tells you whether your control is genuinely tightening or whether you have simply traded a consistent rush for random scatter, which is a common and easily missed outcome of overcorrecting.

One caveat worth keeping in mind: on a browser, or on any device, part of your measured offset is the hardware rather than you. Sound takes time to leave a speaker and a tap takes time to register, and that delay shifts every reading in the same direction. It is why the direction and the change in your offset are more trustworthy than its absolute value, and why serious measurement corrects for device latency before reporting anything. It is also worth knowing that not every metronome app keeps perfect time in the first place. A wandering reference makes any measurement taken against it meaningless.
