Rushing and dragging get talked about as if they were personality traits. Some players are "rushers", some are "draggers", and that is apparently that. It is a useless way to think about it, because it turns a measurable, correctable habit into a fixed character flaw. Timing is not a gift. It is a motor skill with a number attached, and once you know your number the fix stops being mysterious.
Start By Measuring, Not Guessing
Before any of the advice below is worth reading, get a baseline. You cannot judge your own timing while playing, for reasons worth understanding in their own right, and a teacher's "you were a bit ahead there" is a memory of a feeling rather than a measurement.

Why Rushing Happens
Rushing is not carelessness. It is what your body does under a fairly predictable set of conditions, and naming them tells you where to look.
- Arousal speeds up your clock. Adrenaline compresses your sense of time. A tempo that felt correct in the practice room genuinely feels slow under stage lights, so you "correct" it upward without noticing. This is why bands so often play their set faster live than on the record.
- Effort pulls the pulse forward. Loud passages, fast passages and technically demanding ones all tighten the body, and physical tension shortens note values. Anywhere you are working hard is a place to suspect rushing.
- Anticipation runs ahead of execution. You already know what comes next, and knowing what comes next makes you reach for it. The bar before a chorus, the bar before a fill, the run-in to a solo: these are not random spots, they are the spots where you are thinking ahead.
- Comfort tempos hide the habit. Most players gravitate to a narrow band of tempos where everything feels natural. Practising there almost exclusively means the habit never gets tested. It shows up the moment a piece sits outside that band.
- Drummers accelerate into fills specifically. Moving the hands into position for a fill takes real time, and the usual unconscious solution is to start the fill fractionally early and speed up through it. This one is so consistent that it is worth practising grooves and fills as separate exercises before ever joining them.
Dragging has a shorter list. It usually comes from either reading and processing (you are decoding the notation rather than playing it) or from physically not being able to execute a passage at the tempo, in which case the timing problem is really a technique problem wearing a disguise.
Why Slow Tempos Are Harder Than Fast Ones
Here is the part that surprises people. If your timing falls apart somewhere, it is far more likely to be at 60 BPM than at 160.
Fast tempos are propped up by information. At 160 BPM a beat arrives every 375 milliseconds, so you are corrected almost continuously and there is very little room in each bar for drift to accumulate before the next reference point arrives. There is also so much happening per bar that a small timing error is buried under the sheer density of notes.
At 60 BPM you get a full second of silence between beats, and nothing in that second tells you where you are. You are running on your internal clock alone, which is exactly the thing being tested. Worse, the maths works against your perception: 50 milliseconds of error is 13 percent of a beat at 160 BPM, where it is unmissable, but only 5 percent of a beat at 60 BPM, where it feels almost fine. The error is identical in milliseconds. It just stops feeling like an error.
The practical consequence is straightforward. Slow practice is not a gentler version of fast practice, it is a harder and more revealing version, and it is the tempo range where a timing habit has nowhere to hide. If you can hold a genuinely steady pulse at 60 BPM you can hold one anywhere.
Five Fixes That Actually Change the Number
Every one of these is aimed at a specific cause above, and every one is testable. That last part matters: if you cannot re-measure, you cannot tell a real improvement from a good day.
- Subdivide out loud. The single highest-value change most players can make. Counting only the beat leaves the gap between beats as guesswork, and guesswork is where drift lives. Count or vocalise the eighths, then the sixteenths. The gaps stop being empty and the pulse stops wandering. This is also why a metronome that can click subdivisions is worth more than one that only marks the beat.
- Practise where you fail, not where you are comfortable. Set the metronome to the tempo that exposes the habit, which is usually slower than you would choose. If your comfort zone is 120 BPM, your problem is at 70.
- Isolate the transitions. Loop the two bars around the spot where you accelerate: the run-in to the fill, the last bar before the chorus, the entry after a rest. Play those four bars against a click twenty times. Timing rarely fails evenly across a piece, so practising the whole piece to fix one corner is mostly wasted repetition.
- Deliberately overcorrect, then settle. If you know you sit 60 ms ahead, spend a session aiming to play noticeably behind the click. It will feel wrong, which is the point: your sense of "on the beat" is the thing that is miscalibrated. Aim past the target and let it settle back.
- Use a descending tempo ramp. Everyone builds speed with an ascending BPM ramp, few ever practise downward. Working from 120 down to 60 in structured steps trains the exact skill that fails you, and a speed trainer that can descend as well as ascend makes it automatic instead of something you have to remember to set up.
Then Measure Again
Re-run the same test after a week of this and compare two numbers. The average offset tells you whether the directional habit is shifting toward zero. The spread tells you whether your control is genuinely tightening or whether you have simply traded a consistent rush for random scatter, which is a common and easily missed outcome of overcorrecting.
One caveat worth keeping in mind: on a browser, or on any device, part of your measured offset is the hardware rather than you. Sound takes time to leave a speaker and a tap takes time to register, and that delay shifts every reading in the same direction. It is why the direction and the change in your offset are more trustworthy than its absolute value, and why serious measurement corrects for device latency before reporting anything. It is also worth knowing that not every metronome app keeps perfect time in the first place. A wandering reference makes any measurement taken against it meaningless.
